The Calorie Count in Hummus

Oct 18, 2010

Overview

Hummus is a creamy spread made from chickpeas, tahini, oil and various spices and seasonings. It can be used as a dip for vegetables or spread on crackers for a snack. Many varieties and flavors of hummus are sold in the United States. Two well-known producers are Athenos and Sabra, both of which make a line of hummus products that includes original hummus with no added flavors.

Serving Size

The stated serving size for both Athenos Original Hummus and Sabra Classic Hummus is 2 tbsp. You can use that serving size as a frame of reference when considering the calorie count and other nutritional values. Americans often eat food portions that are larger than the serving size, and you will need to factor this in if you do so, the USDA advises. Also consider the calorie count of the food you eat with hummus.

Calories

A serving of the Athenos Original Hummus contains 50 calories, 25 of which come from fat, while Sabra Classic Hummus has 70 calories, 55 of which come from fat, according to the products' nutrition facts labels. For a 2,000-calorie diet, a serving of the Athenos hummus represents 2.5 percent of your total daily intake. The Sabra hummus is equal to 3.5 percent.

Fat

Athenos Original Hummus contains 3 g of total fat, or 5 percent of the maximum recommended intake. Sabra's Classic Hummus contains 6 g of total fat, or 9 percent of the maximum recommended intake. The Sabra Hummus contains 1 g of saturated fat -- 5 percent of the maximum intake recommendation -- while the Athenos hummus contains no saturated fat. Neither product contains trans fat or cholesterol.

Sodium

Both hummus products will increase your daily sodium intake. The Sabra hummus has 120 mg of sodium per serving, which is 5 percent of the maximum recommended daily intake. The Athenos hummus has 160 mg per serving, or 7 percent of the maximum intake. Your daily sodium intake should be no more than 2,400 mg to help protect against conditions such as hypertension, the USDA advises.

Carbohydrates

Hummus contains only a small amount of carbohydrates. A serving of the Athenos hummus has 5 g of total carbohydrates, equal to 2 percent of the recommended daily intake, while the Sabra hummus contains 4 g of total carbs, or 1 percent of the recommended intake. The carbs in the Athenos hummus include less than 1 g of dietary fiber and less than 1 g of sugars, while the Sabra hummus contains 1 g of dietary fiber and no sugar.

Protein

Both hummus brands contain a small amount of protein: 2 g per serving in Sabra Classic Hummus and 1 g per serving in Athenos Original Hummus. The USDA's Dietary Guidelines do not set a daily intake recommendation for protein because of its prevalence in the American diet, the FDA reports.

Vitamins and Minerals

Hummus is not a good source of essential vitamins and minerals, but each product does contain a small amount of one nutrient. A 2-tbsp. serving of Sabras Classic Hummus contains 2 percent of the recommended daily intake for iron. The Athenos Original Hummus contains 2 percent of the recommended daily intake for vitamin C in each serving Carbohydrates

Product Review: Sabra Roasted Red Pepper Hummus
October 14, 2010
View Article

Bell peppers, chickpeas, garlic and tahini. Those are the only ingredients listed for Sabra Roasted Red Pepper Hummus on the company's website. I've tried several kinds of hummus and it's my all-time favorite. The garlic is in perfect proportion to the rest of the ingredients. (I find many hummus spreads to have a tad too much garlic in them for my taste.) Tahini is what gives the hummus a creamy texture, not unlike spreadable cheese or peanut butter. My favorite uses for this hummus are:
- spread it on crackers (low-sodium Ritz is a great choice)
- use it as a vegetable dip, especially for grape tomatoes, sliced red pepper and cucumbers

It would make an excellent substitute for cheese in a vegetable quesadilla. (I would suggest roasted or sauteed red pepper, mild onion and mushrooms as a perfect combination.)

I have tried other Sabra hummus flavors: Spinach and Artichoke and Supremly Spicy Hummus. (Both are good, but bear in mind the latter's label isn't lying; it brought tears to my eyes.) I look forward to trying other flavors, but I suspect my favorite won't change.

The Domestic Buzz

Go Mediterranean with Sabra
October 13, 2010
View Article

I don’t recall when I tasted hummus for the first time, years ago… all I remember is that it was a revelation. Creamy and smooth; light, yet rich at the same time. There’s nothing else like it. The best thing is that hummus is kid-friendly. My toddler eats it like it’s chocolate pudding, licking it off a spoon. Giving her crackers or pita bread to dip into the hummus is pointless, as she just licks it off until the bread is too soggy to be any good. Sometimes, when I’m not watching, she’ll just use her fingers to get whatever is left in the tub!

There are a few brands of hummus available at the grocery store, but my favorite by far is Sabra. Its hummus doesn’t leave me with a funny aftertaste like one of its competitors, and it’s the perfect consistency. The nice big tub is a huge plus.

Sabra hummus is available in a variety of flavors and convenient sizes – 7oz., 10oz or 14oz. tubs or convenient “To Go” packs. A few of their 13 flavor varieties include:

  • Classic Hummus: High-quality cooked and pureed chickpeas, a touch of garlic and tahini (ground sesame seeds) for a smooth and creamy spread.
  • Hummus with Roasted Pine Nuts: Lightly roasted pine nuts is nestled in Classic Hummus.
  • Roasted Red Pepper Hummus: Bits of red pepper complement the rich texture of hummus.
  • Chunky Hummus: Grinding is minimized to give the hummus more bite and bold flavor.
  • Roasted Garlic Hummus: An abundance of finely roasted garlic in Classic Hummus.
  • Greek Olive Hummus: Green and Black olives are paired with Classic Hummus.

Not only are Sabra products delicious, they are also nutritious, with no trans-fats or cholesterol. Chickpeas – the main ingredient of Sabra hummus – are a great source of fiber. Some ideas of how to use hummus:

  • Serve hummus and pita bread instead of chips and sour cream.
  • Substitute hummus for mayonnaise in tuna or chicken salad.
  • Substitute hummus for cream cheese or butter on a bagel.
  • Make a hummus sandwich (my girls love this!)
  • Use it to thicken soups.
  • Spread it on prepared pizza dough, top with veggies and cheese, and you’ve got hummus pizza!

Sabra doesn’t just sell hummus, however. They offer a complete line of authentic Mediterranean dips, appetizers and spreads that are perfect for lunch, a tasty snack or entertaining family and friends.

  • Sabra Fresh Dips: Made with creamy Mediterranean–style yogurt, vegetables and spices to make a dip that is healthy enough for an everyday snack. Available in Sauteed Onion, Spicy Pepper, Tzatziki, and Garlic and Herb.
  • Mediterranean Garden Varieties: Italian Caponata, Turkish Salad, Moroccan Matbucha, Babaganoush, and Grilled Eggplant, just to name a few.

Birthday party posts are my fave. And I also dread them. Because I like to give every detail of the party. (I know, you’re shocked by that statement). I want to tell you about each and every decoration, game and food. But I realize that can make for some dull blogging. So, instead, I’ll try (TRY) to put everything into one post. Or maybe I’ll do two. Hmmm….

The Elements of Review

Review of the Day: Sabra Hummus

Ok, here's a review that's more of a recommendation. I have tried many different types of hummus. I have found the best one on the market. It's called Sabra. You've probably seen the commercial where the people are supposedly on a Mediterranean vacation, but they are really in their backyard. Because eating Sabra is just like being on a Mediterranean vacation. It's so true. This hummus is creamy, tasty and never too spicy. My favorite flavor is the Roasted Pine Nut, but it comes in other flavors too: Roasted Red Pepper, Classic, Greek Olive and many others. I accidentally picked up the Greek Olive instead of the Pine Nut today, but I don't mind because it's so good. I could eat it right out of the package with a spoon;-) Check out their website and see all the flavors of hummus and other products they have.

Roasted Garlic Hummus Quesadilla

One of the aspects of my job with Sabra Hummus is to get creative with recipes (not bad thing right?) so I decided this morning that I was going to make a sandwich.

I went to work using leftover whole chicken, a half used red pepper, some reduced fat Athenos Feta and some Sabra Roasted Garlic Hummus. I simply spread some hummus on the Flatout Light Italian Wrap and topped with some thin slices of chicken. I then chopped up the red pepper (use a lot for the crunch factor) and some feta.

I then grilled it (on my press) until crispy, allowed it to cool slightly on a cooling rack and then consumed. Naturally my husband and son saw me munching and came a running.

Have you tried using hummus in grilled sandwiches? What recipes do you do most often with hummus?

My husband is not a big fan of hummus. He's a hummus snob actually, and will only eat mine (his favorite being sun-dried tomato hummus), but I convinced him that this hummus was like no other he had ever tasted. His response? "You're right. This hummus taste like no other hummus I've ever tasted. I really like it." BINGO! Another way to incorporate more legumes and beans into his diet- and no cooking required. Sabra's hummus is much richer than traditional hummus it is incredibly delicious with crackers, a spread in wraps and pita breads, corn tortillas and with or without veggies. It can be enjoyed as part of dinner or as a snack. My daughter likes the creamy texture, but no the tangy lemon and garlic flavor as much so it may not be a favorite with small children.

Hummus Mashed Potatoes
August 23, 2010
View Article

A unique and delicious take on mashed potatoes!

Mashed potatoes are the old standby food. Pretty much everyone likes them and many people absolutely love them. You might even love them so much that you don't think it's possible for them to get any better. But you're wrong. I recently came across a recipe that adds Sabra Hummus to classic mashed potatoes and I'm in love. Mashed potatoes just got even more exciting for me!

You may have tried adding cheese to mashed potatoes before. A little gorgonzola goes a long way in adding some flavor to typical mashed potatoes. But have you ever thought of adding hummus? Probably not. But why not? This recipe is inspired by Sabra, is easy to make and will please any crowd. Not only will hummus mashed potatoes add some extra protein to your side dish, but they'll add a whole lot of flavor.

In fact, these Sabra mashed potatoes could be taken from side dish to main dish. Serve with a side of veggies, and Sabra Hummus mashed potatoes make a completely delicious meal.

What you need:
* 6 Yellow Potatoes (about 5 cups, peeled and cubed)
* 1 1/3 C Sabra Hummus
* 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
* Salt and pepper to taste
* 1 lemon (cut in 6 wedges)
* 2 Tablespoons fresh parsley (finely chopped)

What to do:
1) Peel the potatoes and place in a bowl of water to cover as you peel them. This will prevent discoloration. Cut potatoes into 1 ½ inch cubes and place in a medium-sized pot with enough water to cover and a ¼ t of salt.

2) Bring pot to a boil and simmer over medium heat for about 30 minutes, or until a fork goes gently through the potatoes.

3) Drain potatoes and put back into pot over medium heat, until moisture leaves the potatoes and they appear dry (about 3 mins.). Remove from heat.

4) Start mashing the potatoes with a potato masher. Add 1 1/3 C Sabra hummus, 2 T olive oil, and salt and pepper to taste.

5) Top with fresh parsley and serve with a lemon wedge to squeeze over top.

Serve to a hungry crowd or sit down with a big bowl of Sabra Hummus mashed potatoes all for yourself. You'll never want plain mashed potatoes again!

Grilled Summer Vegetables Hummus Pita Pizza
August 15, 2010
View Article

This hummus pizza won't weigh you down!

We all love pizza, but sometimes pizza during summertime can just feel too heavy. All that cheese and heavy sauce can weigh you down and make you feel like wearing a big t-shirt instead of a bathing suit. But if you're craving pizza, why not try a Grilled Summer Vegetables Hummus Pita Pizza with Sabra Hummus? It's delicious!

This recipe takes the basic idea of pizza, but adds tons of grilled veggies and uses Sabra Hummus instead of cheese and sauce. What does that mean? It means that you get a ton of nutritious veggies and protein. Serve this pizza at your next summer BBQ and your guests will not be disappointed. The Sabra Hummus adds a deliciously satisfying touch to a light, nutritious pizza!

What you need:
* 1 ½ cups summer squash (about 2 medium-sized) yellow and/or green
* 2 vine ripe tomatoes
* 1 red onion
* 3 (6 inch) round pitas
* ¼ cup olive oil
* 1 cup Sabra Classic Hummus
* 2 teaspoons salt
* Black pepper and salt to taste

What to do:

1) Slice summer squash in quarter-inch rounds. Place in bowl and add 2 T olive oil and ¼ t salt.

2) Peel and cut red onion in half. Then slice each half with grain in 1/3 inch wedges. Place in bowl with 1 T olive oil and sprinkle with salt and mix.

3) Cut tomatoes in half and slice in 4-6 half moon wedges each. Place in bowl with 1 T olive oil and ¼ t salt and combine

4) Grill summer squash for about 4 minutes on each side. Grill onions about 5 minutes, rotating once. Grill tomatoes about 5 minutes, rotating once.

5) Warm pita on the grill about 3 minutes on each side. Once warm, remove the pita from the heat and slather with 1/3 C Sabra Hummus

6) Top with all the veggies. Cut into 8 pieces.

Serve at your next summer party or have a nice light summer meal on your own! Now you never have to feel guilty about indulging in pizza again. In fact, the more you eat the more veggies you're getting!

Sabra Roasted Red Pepper Hummus
August 9, 2010
View Article

One of my new favorite things is hummus. I have not really tried it until this year, and I am so happy I finally did after seeing and hearing great things about it.

So, Sabra sent me a coupon to try a free hummus, and I picked the Roasted Red Pepper Hummus. I wasn’t sure really why I had picked that flavor to be honest- I’m not even really a big fan of red peppers! But, it looked interesting and I figured Why Not?

And, after trying it, I am saying to myself Why Not Why Have I Never Tried This Before!?!?

Honestly, this was absolutely DELICIOUS. It is a pale yellow in color, with a center of pieces of red peppers. Super creamy, with a great flavor, I’m almost at a loss how to describe the taste other than delicious. It had a great salty flavor, with bits of garlicy flavor too. What I also liked was that the hummus itself did not have a really powerful red pepper flavor, and I could enhance the red pepper flavor to my preferences simply by mixing some of the middle in with the hummus. Perfection!

Overall, this gets 5 stars. I can CERTAINLY see myself eating this again. I find it very versatile and tasty, and I can’t wait to try other flavors that Sabra has to offer!

Sabra Hummus and Stacy's Pita Chips
July 29, 2010
View Article

A few weeks ago I went with Brett to Cosco's and bought 16 individual tubs of my favorite snack Sabra hummus.

I can eat this snack all day everyday and never get tired of it.
I also love eating it with Stacy's Pita Chips.

I started eating hummus when I was in second grade and my family and I lived just outside D.C.

On the weekend we would venture to the Pentagon City Mall which was my first real taste of what an upscale mall looked like.

My parents would buy us an array of food which would always include hummus and pita chips.

It's a snack I am always obsessed about!

John warned me about buying a Cosco size snack saying "It ends up being a race against you and your snack. All you think about is if you can finish the whole thing off before it goes bad or gets stale."

He was right!

I ate those tubs and chips like it was my job.

I am happy to report that they are all gone!

Uncompensated Product Review: Sabra Hummus
http://subjectivesoup.blogspot.com/2010/07/uncompensated-product-review-sabra.html

I love Mediterranean food--such things as tabouleh, falafel, baba ganoush, and shish kabobs. A real favorite of mine is hummus. Restaurant hummus at most Mediterranean places is usually fantastic no matter how lowly the restaurant. Unfortunately, when I've tried to make my own hummus (grinding chick peas is how you start) it usually tastes like ground cardboard.

Now along comes Sabra hummus. I saw their commercial for this favorite Mediterranean treat of mine on television recently. I had never seen a commercial hummus advertised on television before so I decided I'd better try it. Sabra makes their hummus (it's sort of like a dip or a spread) in various flavors. I opted for the lovely spinach and artichoke version.

Here's what I think. Sabra Hummus is definitely better than any hummus I can make. It is not as good as hummus I've had in most middle eastern restaurants. I'm guessing that's because restaurant hummus is free of preservatives and is made fresh daily, whereas Sabra's version is not. Either way, it's hummus! So, if you crave that special delicacy you could do worse than sampling Sabra's.

If you try it, let me know what you think. And just to let you know, this review of Sabra Hummus is my own personal opinion for which I received absolutely no compensation (although, Sabra, I'd love to be your spokesperson, if you're listening.) One more thing--I noticed that Sabra's website is conducting a contest for a trip to Turkey--if you're interested.

Contest: Sabra Taste Intervention

There’s a national Taste Intervention contest taking place and Sabra Dipping Company is hoping to offer millions of people a chance to break free from their snacking and food ruts. Wouldn’t you like to win a trip to Turkey to attend culinary school or have Sabra’s chef Colombe Jacobson come to your home for one-on-one coaching?

Sabra wants to know your “food ruts” – like does the majority of your lunches consist of a ham sandwich or do you always snack on toast and jelly in the middle of the night? Whatever you’d like to share – Sabra (and I) would like to know.

As for me, I need to break from the wheat crackers and port wine cheese spread. As for my sweetie, he resorts to peanut butter and jelly on Saltine crackers. You can nominate yourself, friends or loved ones for the contest.

Questions:

1. What are your “food ruts” – snacks and foods you find yourself continuously eating….

2. Have you ever had Sabra hummus? What’s your favorite flavor?

Answer one or both of these questions for 5 extra entries into any of my current giveaways until July 30. Also, let Sabra hear your thoughts – tweet them your answer [@sabra] using #foodrut at the end. Further details about the Taste Intervention contest can be found here.

Good luck – I hope one of my readers win the contest!

Disclosure: I will receive coupons for free Sabra hummus in exchange for spreading the word about the Taste Intervention, which I will gladly accept because their hummus is delicious! I would never suggest something that I don’t eat myself!

Exciting News!

I have REALLY exciting news that I have wanted to share with my readers since last week. Sadly, with all the work that has been done on my site I wasn’t able to post about it until now.

Some of my readers maybe have seen ads on TV or online for a new contest that Sabra is having called Sabra Taste Intervention. Here is the commercial just in case you haven’t seen it yet.

Sabra’s Taste Intervention contest encourages people to either nominate themselves or someone else who is in desperate need of “Taste Intervention”. You know you are in need of an intervention when you and your Chinese food delivery man are on a first name basis. Or when you call to order pizza and the man on the other end of the phone addresses you by name and says “The usual?”. And seriously, if you find yourself eating faux cheese from a can then that is the ultimate sign that you need to spice up your meals.

To enter all you need to do is visit the official website at http://www.sabra.com/sabraintervention.

There are two options found on the “Nominate” tab. One is to nominate a friend or loved one and the other is to nominate yourself. You can either submit your entry via e-mail or Facebook. Simply write why you (or a friend) is in great need of a “Taste Intervention” and then submit it. If you need some ideas you can browse the current entries found on the site. I have read at least half of them and some of them are pretty funny.

The contest is currently in full swing and ends on August 8, 2010.

You are also allowed to vote five times per day, one vote per person. If you and a few friends enter you could vote for each other.

The grand prize is a trip to Turkey for you and a friend where you will meet up with a Sabra chef and have a culinary adventure sure to awaken your taste buds. The winner will also experience private cooking classes as well as receive food and spices shipped directly to their own so that you can create gourmet masterpieces when you return from your trip.

Second prize consists of a chef coming to your home and prepare an amazing dinner for your family and guests.

Third prize is a Sabra Taste Intervention kit complete with coupons, spices and more.

WHY is this such exciting news you might ask? It’s exciting because there are five nation wide judges final judges and I’m one of them. How COOL is that?

The first round of judging is done by popular vote (whomever gets the most votes from site visitors). The final round of voting goes to the five judges, one of which is yours truly. Move over Judge Judy… make way for Judge Kimberly! LOL!

It is such an honor to be asked to be a judge. I’m going to be included in official press releases and everything. I ♥ it!

Hummus-stuffed chicken breasts

Serves 4

1/2 cup hummus

4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts

1 cup all-purpose flour

4 large eggs, egg whites only

1 tablespoon water

1 1/2 cups breadcrumbs or Panko

Salt and pepper to taste

1/4 cup olive oil

Place chicken in a large plastic bag and pound until 1/4 inch thick, about 8 inches long and 6 inches wide.

Lay the chicken breasts smooth side down and season with salt and pepper. Spread about 2 tablespoons of hummus on the chicken, leaving a 1/2-inch border all around.

Roll each chicken breast and wrap in aluminum foil or plastic wrap. Twist the ends like a candy wrapper and chill in the refrigerator for 45 minutes.

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Using three shallow dishes, pour the flour in one, lightly whisk the egg whites and water in the second and place the breadcrumbs in the third. Unwrap the chicken breasts and, using tongs, roll in the flour, submerge in the egg whites, and then place in the breadcrumbs, using your fingers to press the breadcrumbs so they stick.

Heat 1/4 cup olive oil in a large nonstick skillet until shimmering (about 4 minutes). Place the rolled chicken breasts in the oil, seam side down. Cook until golden, about 2 minutes on all sides. Put the chicken breasts (seam side down) in a baking dish and cook in an oven for about 15 minutes or until thermometer registers 160 degrees. Remove from oven and let sit for 5 minutes.

Hummus Review
Hummus is a delicious snack I only started to eat in the past few years, but I'm glad I did. It as an exquisite taste and there are a million different versions to try it in, like Supremely Spicy, Roasted Garlic, Sun Dried Tomato, and more. More on the other side.

Hummus was an entirely foreign concept to me a few years ago. I mean I'm 25% Persian so that's kind of ridiculous, but it pretty much also explains why I love it so damn much now. I first tried it at a hookah bar and was basically blown away. If you don't know what Hummus consists of, it's basically chick peas, or garbanzo beans, crushed up into a paste, with various spices and a bit of oil. It's simple to make at home for extremely cheap, and the price in stores isn't too bad. The best part is it's relatively healthy and a great substitute for when I'd otherwise be eating some type of meat.

Now, I've had multiple brands of hummus, store-bought, home-made, etc. Home-made hummus has the advantage of your ability to control the taste and healthiness of it, but for some reason I can never get it to taste as good as Sabra brand hummus. I don't know what they do, but it blows my taste buds away every time I eat it. In fact I'm eating it right now, and it has never tasted better. Sabra has tons of different flavors of hummus, too; for example, my favorites are Supremely Spicy (finely chopped up spanish peppers and spices), Roasted Garlic (finely chopped garlic), and Original. They have lots of exotic flavors like Jalapeño, Luscious Lemon, Chipotle, Hummus with Salsa (can't find it but dying to try it), Greek Olive, and more.

If you've never tasted hummus, it's thick and pasty like a bean dip or something. It's very savory with almost a smokey hint to it. It has an intense taste, which is great. I usually get a container of Sabra hummus and a six pack of Toufayan whole wheat pita bread and boom, there's basically two meals. You can dip whatever you want in it, too; when I get tired of dipping bread in it, I use tortilla chips and it's a whole different taste and textural experience. Hummus is basically a superfood; it's lightweight, relatively healthy, relatively cheap (about $5.28 for the hummus and pita bread where I get it), absolutely delicious, and comes in an enormous variety of flavors. And nobody does it better than Sabra.

Sabra Launches Mediterranean Foods Ad Campaign

June 17, 2010
View Article

ASTORIA, NY -- Sabra Dipping Co. LLC, a joint venture between the Strauss Group and the Frito-Lay North America division of PepsiCo, is kicking off a nationwide multimedia advertising campaign to promote its wide variety of vegetarian spreads and dips.

Advertising Age reported that Sabra tested the campaign in five regional markets last year and, based on its success, has expanded it nationwide. Launched last week, it includes television commercials, websites, digital ads, and a presence in social media like Facebook and Twitter, along with other promotions and events.

The campaign proposes to rescue those "in need of a taste intervention" by getting them to try Sabra’s hummus (offered in 15 flavors), babaganoush, ratatouille, Turkish salad and more. Visitors to the campaign website, sabraintervention.com, can nominate family members and friends who need an intervention to help them "get out of a food rut." The website offers visitors the opportunity to enter a sweepstakes, offering a trip to Turkey as first prize.

The television commercials position Sabra as a delicious way to "taste the Mediterranean without leaving home." They're intended to promote the Sabra line to the growing ranks of Mediterranean-diet enthusiasts who already enjoy the vegetarian classics, and to introduce them to those unfamiliar with the time-honored staple dishes.

Ad Age said Sabra plans to spend "significantly" more on advertising this year than the estimated $3.3 million it spent last year.

The company opened a new $61 million manufacturing plant in Richmond, VA, last month. Plans call for moving all production to Richmond by September, and relocating company headquarters to the area.

All Sabra products are certified kosher, and all its hummus and eggplant items are pareve. They’re offered in a variety of formats including single-serve "grab-and-go packs."

Sabra Spreads Out

Sabra Dipping Company made a splash in the area by investing $61 million in Chesterfield to build a new hummus factory in Chesterfield.

With its new facility in place the New York-based company, which is a joint venture between Frito-Lay and an Israeli food and beverage company, is ready to make a nationwide push for exposure.

According to a story in the New York Times that means ramping up its ad budget, embracing social media, going on a cross country tasting tour, and holding a contest.

The Sabra brand manager told the New York Times that they plan on significantly increasing last year’s ad spending of $3.3 million.

Sabra is also holding a contest called Sabra Taste Intervention that offers a first place trip to Turkey, with a second prize of a home dinner party prepared by the company’s in house chef. The premise is to nominate yourself or a friend who is stuck in a food rut, and needs more flavor in their life.

Sabra executives have said they plan on moving the company’s headquarters to Richmond from Queens, New York.

THE economy has remade the Madison Avenue landscape in myriad ways, among them changing the types of products that are advertised frequently now compared with during the boom years.

In other words, Hummer, no; hummus, yes.

Shorthand, to be sure, but it encapsulates a major trend: Ads for glossy, big-ticket purchases like behemoth sport utilities have been supplanted in many instances by ads for prosaic, less expensive products like packaged foods.

Several food marketers increased ad spending markedly in the first quarter compared with the period a year ago, according to the Kantar Media research division of WPP. Among them were ConAgra Foods, up 22.9 percent; H. J. Heinz, up 45.2 percent; Hershey, up 81.2 percent; General Mills, up 15.5 percent; Kraft Foods, up 17.8 percent; and J. M. Smucker, up 12.4 percent.

Among the brands planning to spend more throughout 2010 is the Sabra line of refrigerated dips and spreads that includes more than a dozen varieties of, yes, hummus. Sabra is sold by the Sabra Dipping Company, a joint venture of the Strauss Group and the Frito-Lay North America division of PepsiCo.

Although the name of a soft drink predominates in the corporate brand, PepsiCo estimates that $10 billion of its annual revenue of $43.2 billion last year came from what it calls its “good-for-you portfolio” of products like Aquafina water, Near East couscous, Quaker Oats and Tropicana juices.

Among those products are smaller brands like Sabra, Naked juices, Smartfood snacks, Stacy’s pita chips and True North nuts.

PepsiCo intends to “rapidly expand” its lineup of healthier fare, according to the company’s 2009 annual report, by taking steps like “investing to accelerate the growth of these platforms” — in other words, more advertising.

•

A campaign for Sabra that was tested in five regional markets last year “performed well, better than our expectations,” said Mina Penna, Sabra brand manager at Sabra Dipping in Astoria, Queens, so it is being expanded, beginning on Monday, into a national initiative.

The campaign will include television commercials, two Web sites, digital ads, a presence in social media like Facebook and Twitter, ads in stores, promotions and events like a chefs’ tour of 19 cities and house parties where guests can sample Sabra products.

The campaign is being created by the New York office of StrawberryFrog, which also creates ads for Stacy’s and True North. The premise of the humorous campaign, which carries the theme “Adventure awaits,” is that Sabra is just what a pallid palate craves.

People who enjoy what they eat and like to try new tastes “sometimes fall into a ‘food rut’ and lose their way a bit on their epicurean journey,” Ms. Penna said, as symbolized in the ads by a rote reliance on Chinese takeout, lettuce-only salads or even — gasp! — spray cheese.

The campaign proposes saving all the unfortunates who are “in need of a taste intervention,” as an announcer declares, by switching them to Sabra.

Visitors to sabraintervention.com will be able to nominate family members and friends for comestible makeovers.

(Coincidentally, Kraft last month introduced a humorous campaign for its Sandwich Shop Mayo line of flavored mayonnaise that carries the theme “Give your sandwich a makeover” and features cast members of the HGTV reality series “Design Star” intervening in the lives of bored eaters.)

“We use the term ‘epicurious’ ” to describe the target audience, said Chip Walker, partner and head of planning at StrawberryFrog New York. (The Condé Nast Digital unit of Advance Publications likes the term, too, judging by its epicurious.com Web site.)

•

Some potential buyers of Sabra are “adventurous eaters who we haven’t quite connected with yet,” Mr. Walker said, and some are “people who don’t know what hummus is or what it tastes like.”

To help out the latter, commercials from the test last year, which describe Sabra as a delicious way to “taste the Mediterranean without leaving home,” will promote the hummus and perhaps introduce some people to it.

In addition to StrawberryFrog New York, others working on the campaign include OMD in New York, a media agency that is part of the Omnicom Group, and Seymour Public Relations in Bergenfield, N.J.

Sabra Dipping will spend “significantly” more on advertising this year than the estimated $3.3 million it spent last year, Ms. Penna said. She declined to be more specific.

The first of 19 cities on the chefs’ tour, called the Sabra Taste Adventure, is Richmond, Va., near a new, $61 million manufacturing plant that Sabra Dipping opened last month. Sabra Dipping executives have said they plan to move the company’s headquarters to the Richmond area from Astoria.

That would make it a rough year for New Yorkers who like their local food companies. First, the bakery Stella D’oro closed its plant in the Bronx, and now Sabra is going to leave Queens.

Sabra Roasted Garlic Hummus
April 15, 2010
View Article

“What’s all this buzz about HUMMUS?” I thought to myself one day. I see it everywhere on bloggie world. On sandwiches, on top of salads, eaten with veggies, eaten with pita chips. What is so freakin’ GOOD about HUMMUS?

Well, I recieved a free coupon for Sabra Hummus in the mail, and I was finally going to get to try some of this special spread for myself!

According to their website, “If you haven’t tasted Sabra hummus, you haven’t tasted hummus”. Seeing as I had nothing to compare THIS particular hummus to anything Ive tried in the past becuase I never actually HAD any- something told me if I dind’t like Sabra hummus I probably wouldn’t like any hummus at all.

So, I went online to see all the flavors Sabra had to offer. Classic, Hummus with Roasted Pine Nuts, Chunky Hummus, Roasted Red Pepper Hummus, Roasted Garlic Hummus, Greek Olive Hummus (I think I’ll be skipping that one), Luscious Lemon Hummus, Supremely Spicey Hummus, Jalapeno Hummus, Cranberry & Fig (defietely want to try this one!!), Sundried Tomato, Carmelized Onion, Chipotle, and Peppadew (peppa-what!?).

I decided to go to Sotp n Shop the next day to pick a flavor. They didn’t have the Cranberry & Fig one like I wanted to try, but I settled for the Roasted Garlic Flavor.

So I got home and opened up the container. A pungent smell of garlic certainly filled the room- and it should! When I looked at the hummus itself, there was a pile mound of chopped garlic in the middle, followed by bits of red peppers dispersed throughout the spread. It had a pale orange/tan color, and also had little pools of orange liquid, (presumably garlic oil?) on the surface as well.

I decided to take the plunge. I took a carrot and dipped it in- yumm! It was CERTAINLY garlic-y, and had a distinct taste for sure! It was creamy and smooth, the only chunks being the garlic pieces if you chose to eat them. Very flavorful, and the perfect blend of garlic, chick peas and salty after taste.

I enjoyed this hummus three ways so far- one with plain/salted soy chips, one with veggies like carrots, and one (my favorite way!) in place of mayo (eww!) in egg salad on whole wheat bread. Since I loooove egg salad, it was a great way to add flavor to the sandwich and add an extra kick due to the peppers and garlic.

Overall, I give this hummus 4 stars. It was tasty, provided healthy fats, a little fiber, and is a much better replacement for ranch dip for dressings or mayo for spreads. It loses some points because it has potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate to preserve the freshness :( And, although 2 tbsp doesn’t seem like a lot for a serving, it’s the perfect ratio if you are having a little baggie of baby carrots (of course, more veggies= more hummus!! :) ). It really is delicious, and I plan on trying it with pretzels soon, too.
